Aboriginal Carpentry Program (ACP)
Delivered by the Indigenous Leadership Development Institute, Inc. (ILDI) in partnership with Red River College, the ACP is a 10-month program for Indigenous people.
ACP offers a wide range of skills in all areas of building carpentry. The main focus of the program is to deliver a crossover of carpentry knowledge and skills, which is relevant to the trades involved in the carpentry industry. Graduates of the program can apply their newly acquired skills in apprenticeship trades such as carpentry, building construction, plumbing, electrical, painting, plastering, drywall and taping. Graduates will have the knowledge and skills required to excel in the carpentry industry and pursue a trade.
Upon completion of the required hours, students will receive a Level 1 Accreditation in Carpentry which is recognized by the Apprenticeship Branch of Manitoba and obtain the Mature Student Diploma equivalent to Grade 12 as recognized by the Province of Manitoba.
ACP will educate students with an understanding of a safe work site, life skills, resume writing, cultural awareness and tools to successfully pursue a career in a chosen carpentry field.
The program accepts eighteen (18) students per 10-month session.
Indigenous, Minimum of 19 years of age, out of school in the past 6 months, eligible for funding support, and completion of grade 9 level (Senior 1).
Features of the Aboriginal Carpentry Program:
- Full time Retention and Support Worker and ACP Assistant who is available to support or assist students with any issues that may prevent them from being successful;
- Cultural Awareness;
- CPR certification;
- WHMIS certification;
- First Aid certification;
- Workshops are provided on various topics that will instill positive ideas and motivation, for example: Life skills, Personal Money Management, Interview Skills, Resume Writing, Self-Marketing, Networking, Workplace Etiquette;
- Job Search Support, Career Exploration, Employment Retention, Skill Identification and continuous follow are provided;
- Access to a fully staffed Career Resource Department for resume writing and career counseling
