Our History

2000 – 2008

Indigenous Leadership Development Institute Inc. (ILDI) is a non-profit corporation that has been promoting and supporting good self-governance and capacity-building within the Indigenous community since its incorporation in 2000.

ILDI employs an all-Indigenous staff and work with over fifty Indigenous facilitators who bring their knowledge and expertise to Indigenous communities across Canada.

From strategic planning to negotiation, from education and conflict resolution to governance, accountability and inter-government relations, ILDI provides leadership development to advance self-governance and help bring important economic development opportunities to communities.

Through unique, cutting-edge training that is customized to meet the specific needs of Indigenous leaders and communities, ILDI provides education and capacity-building through engagement, training and workshops for a range of important projects using research, mentorship, policy development and leadership-advancement tools.

2008 – 2009

In 2008, at the request of Indigenous leaders, ILDI worked in partnership to initiate a Nation-to-Nation Forum with Indigenous Leaders in Canada and Native American Leaders in the USA. In 2009, ILDI attended the World Business Forum in New York City, New York, USA and developed a clear vision for a similar gathering for Indigenous Peoples of the world.

2010 – 2019

The very next year, in 2010, ILDI launched the first-ever World Indigenous Business forum. Since the first forum in New York City, forums have been held in New York City, USA (2011); Sydney, Australia (2012); Windhoek, Namibia, (2013); City of Guatemala (2014); Oahu, Hawaii, (2015); Saskatoon, Canada (2016); Santiago, Chile (2017); Rotorua, New Zealand (2018); Vancouver, Canada (2019).

ILDI’s important youth program, Empowering Indigenous Youth in Governance and Leadership (EIYGL), supports a vision for Indigenous youth by providing mentorship and meaningful skill development through ILDI’s Executive Training, providing Indigenous youth opportunities to facilitate and learn to lead training under the guidance of ILDI and its senior facilitators.

This legacy program builds effective leaders using traditional community practices and learnings from our Elders as well as contemporary leaders.

At the forefront of national and international training and development for Indigenous leaders, the Indigenous Leadership Development Institute Inc. is well-positioned to bring global learning and advancement to Indigenous leaders, communities and groups with customized training and education solutions.
